Research Network Regional Meetings & LAHN-Linked Events.

Here you will find details about the previous and future planned regional meetings of the LAHN. Convened by Peter Ward, the founding meeting was held in Austin, Texas, in late August 2006 and brought together several of the regional project leaders from Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico and Peru. At that meeting the broad parameters of the study were established, the goals identified and a strategy and methodology developed (see “Research Methodology”). Working with a common research proposal, the aim was for participants to solicit funding from their respective Universities, Foundations and countries. Realizing that the creation of seed funding and the expansion of the network would take a hear or two as additional research groups came on board, it was decided that in three cities would start with a preliminary phase of fieldwork and data collection; specifically that of a restudy of several settlements that some members had surveyed thirty years earlier when they were at the beginning of their consolidation trajectories. The idea was to try to return to the same lots and dwellings in order to better understand the levels of land use change, population turnover, and household organizational structures as these self-help settlements were consolidated. This restudy was undertaken in Bogotá and Mexico City (drawing upon Alan Gilbert and Peter Ward’s 1978-79 fieldwork – see “Network Publications” portal); and in Guatemala City where Bryan Roberts had conducted research in the late 1960s.
